Civil servants in Saxony and their families are to receive better financial protection if they are injured on duty. More money is also planned for the family of the police officer who was killed in 2025.

Saxon civil servants who are injured or killed on duty and their families are to receive almost twice as much compensation in future. 150,000 euros instead of the previous 80,000 euros is provided for in a planned amendment to the law, for example in the event of incapacity for duty following an accident during a life-threatening act of service, as announced by the Ministry of Finance. In the event of death, the widow or widower will in future receive 100,000 euros instead of 60,000 euros.

Higher payment for the family of the police officer killed in Dresden

The amendment to the law is to come into force retroactively from January 1, 2025, so that the family of the young police officer from Dresden who was killed last year will also receive higher compensation. The 32-year-old died during an operation in Brandenburg. A suspected car thief hit him with his car. The trial against the 27-year-old defendant is currently underway at Cottbus District Court.

First increase since 1999

"Of course, money cannot make up for the damage suffered or even the loss of a person. Nevertheless, police officers and firefighters should worry less about their financial security," said Finance Minister Christian Piwarz (CDU) according to a press release. Unfortunately, officers are increasingly exposed to violence and have to risk life and limb in critical situations. Against this backdrop, Piwarz wants to increase compensation payments for the first time since 1999.

The state parliament will now decide on the adoption of the plans. The opposition parties were involved in the creation of the draft as part of the consultation process.
