More new cases of extremism and a falling clearance rate: investigators in Saxony have their hands full.

The authorities in Saxony registered more extremist crimes last year. Last year, the Saxony State Criminal Police Office (LKA) took over 1,449 new cases - 253 more than in the previous year, according to a minor question from the Left Party in the state parliament. In 2024, there were 1,196 cases. The Police Counter-Terrorism and Extremism Center (PTAZ) is responsible for this at the LKA. The "Sächsische Zeitung" and the "Leipziger Volkszeitung" first reported on this.

More new cases than closed cases

"The influx of new cases is now higher than the number of cases that the PTAZ has been able to close so far: 623 investigations were closed in 2024, compared to 738 in 2025," explained MP Juliane Nagel (Left Party), who regularly questions the figures in parliament. The clearance rate has fallen slightly, from around two thirds to 63% most recently. Every case involving a suspect is considered solved, regardless of the subsequent legal outcome.

According to the statistics, the PTAZ took over 759 open cases into the new year, a good hundred more than at the beginning of 2024. 266 cases (35%) are being investigated by the Special Commission on Right-Wing Extremism (Soko Rex), which specializes in crimes from the right-wing spectrum. 17 cases (six percent) are the responsibility of the Special Commission on Left-Wing Extremism.
