Bautzen in eastern Saxony can now officially call itself a university town. "It always has been and now it's called that too," said Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU), handing over the corresponding certificate on Wednesday. The municipality on the River Spree with a good 41,000 inhabitants can now display the title on its town signs. The town, which was first mentioned as Budusin in 1002, is considered the political and cultural center of the Sorbs in the settlement area of the national minority.
The rural area should be strengthened in the areas of science, innovation and education, said Kretschmer - after all, half of the people in the Free State live there. The founding of the Cooperative State University was "precisely this contribution". It is recognized by young people and entrepreneurs and opens up many new opportunities. According to Kretschmer, funding for them has therefore been increased in the new state budget to ensure that student numbers remain stable and continue to grow.
