Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) will make his inaugural visit to Saxony on Tuesday (from 2.30 pm). The chancellor will be greeted by the music corps of the mountain town of Schneeberg in front of the state chancellery, and three Sorbian women will present him with bread and salt as a welcome gift.
Afterwards, Merz will take part in a cabinet meeting. After the meeting, a visit to the Dresden Chamber of Crafts' training center is planned. Merz also wants to talk to pupils and apprentices. Finally, the Chancellor is expected to visit the semiconductor manufacturer Globalfoundries, which wants to present its expansion plans for the Dresden plant to the public for the first time.
Following Merz's controversial comments on migrants in the cityscape, several organizations have called for a protest in front of the State Chancellery. However, Merz may already be at his next appointment at the Chamber of Crafts at this time.
Many German cities have seen demonstrations in recent days due to the Chancellor's comments. Merz was accused of racism. In Dresden last Friday, hundreds of people took to the streets because of this.
