Most underage children in Saxony live with siblings in the same household. As the State Statistical Office announced on Tuesday, 73 percent of children lived with siblings last year. Correspondingly, 27 percent of children were living as single children at the time of the survey. According to the initial results of the micro-census, almost half of the children in Saxony had a sister or brother. Around a quarter of children lived with even more siblings.
According to the statistics authority, the differences between urban and rural areas are only slight. However, whether the adults in the household are married or not has a greater influence. In families where married couples live, the proportion of children with siblings is around 80 percent. In families with unmarried adults or single parents, the proportion of only children is significantly higher. Here, between 60 and 65 percent of children have a sister or brother.
