Saxony's Minister President and the churches talk about uncertainty, individualization - and how a stronger "we" can emerge.

Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has spoken to the bishops of the Catholic and Protestant churches in Saxony to promote greater cohesion in society. "What we need most now is to focus on the "we"," said the CDU politician after a meeting in Dresden. "It has to be about us coming together, because only then can we solve the major challenges we face."

The Minister President and his government regularly meet with representatives of the churches in Saxony during the Advent season. Last year, the meeting was canceled due to the formation of the government. Kretschmer spoke of an important meeting that was considered very valuable by the state government.

Bilz: More closeness in uncertain times

The dissolution of affiliations, also in connection with individualization, had been addressed, said Tobias Bilz, Bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony. These times are causing a great deal of uncertainty among people. "In our discussions, we have brought together various things that are important, for example that distances are overcome, that there is a closeness, a time to listen."

"Volunteering is the kit of society," added Heinrich Timmerevers, Bishop of the Diocese of Dresden-Meißen. Campaigns with volunteer commitment such as the traditional "Ablichteln" in Oelsnitz in the Ore Mountains, i.e. putting back the lights at Christmas time, are inspiring and bring confidence. There are always initiatives that promote cohesion. The Kulturkirche in Chemnitz as part of the Capital of Culture year also proved this.
