Is Saxony's archaeology and historic preservation sector at risk of being weakened? The Greens see unique research and culture in danger.

The Greens in the Saxon State Parliament are warning against dismantling the State Offices for Archaeology and Historic Preservation. In the state parliament, they accused the government of seeking to strip the two independent agencies of their authority and downgrade them to specialized departments within the State Directorate. This risks political interference in professional decisions, said State Representative Wolfram Günther: “The planned changes are not a step toward the future, but a devaluation of historic preservation and archaeology.”

By dismantling the State Office for Archaeology and removing the State Museum of Archaeology in Chemnitz from its academic context, the state government is jeopardizing one of Saxony’s most successful cultural and research institutions, criticized State Representative Claudia Maicher. The museum uniquely combines research, knowledge dissemination, and public outreach. Anyone who tears these structures apart weakens archaeology in the Free State.

Greens Call on Government to Halt Structural Reforms

The Greens called on the Saxon government to halt the structural reforms and instead work together with professional associations, the academic community, local governments, and employees to work toward a sustainable future for historic preservation and archaeology. Faster procedures, better digitization, and reliable funding for the relevant authorities are necessary.

Minister Sees No Threat to the Mission of Preserving Heritage

Infrastructure Minister Regina Kraushaar (CDU), who previously headed the State Directorate, spoke on behalf of the government. She made it clear that preserving historical heritage is beyond question. The government, the State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, and the State Office for Archaeology are united in their commitment to this mission. Even if structures change, this commitment remains unchanged.

“Every organization must review itself at regular intervals”

According to Kraushaar, the goal is to ensure long-term operational capacity, strengthen expertise, and deploy existing resources where they are needed. A structural change leads to uncertainty, yet it is necessary to review existing structures from time to time. “Every organization must review itself at regular intervals.”
