Saxony and Estonia combine history and the present. During a visit by the Estonian president, the focus is also on art.

Saxony and Estonia want to expand their economic and cultural cooperation. The topic is the focus of a working meeting between Alar Karis, President of the Baltic Republic, and Minister President Michael Kretschmer (CDU) on May 7 in Dresden. This will be followed by a ceremony during which they will jointly visit the exhibition "Mirror in Mirror" (May 8 to August 31) with Estonian and German art from Lucas Cranach to Gerhard Richter and Arvo Pärt.

It is the first cooperation project between the Dresden State Art Collections (SKD) and the Estonian Art Museum Tallinn.

Exhibition with art by Richter and Pärt

The focus of the show, which according to the SKD is the first of its kind in Germany, is on the historical and cultural relations between the two countries. With around 150 works - paintings, graphics, objects, video and sound installations - it spans the period from the Middle Ages to the present day. The starting point is the friendship between the Estonian composer Arvo Pärt and the German painter Gerhard Richter.

The latter's "Birkenau Cycle" is in dialog with sound installations and original sheet music by Pärt, which are graphic and calligraphic works of art. These loans from the Arvo Pärt Center are being shown outside Estonia for the first time - other exhibits and works of art have never been on display in Germany before.
