The demolition of the Carola Bridge in Dresden was cheaper than expected. The city saved 2.5 million euros. Nevertheless, the Left Party is urging people to keep an eye on the scale of the costs.

The demolition of Dresden's Carola Bridge cost 29.5 million euros - 2.5 million euros less than initially assumed. This is the result of answers to several questions from André Schollbach, chairman of the Left Party parliamentary group in the city council. Last September, shortly before the work was completed, the city administration had still assumed a total of 32 million euros.

Cost reduction for accompanying measures

The accompanying measures in particular turned out to be cheaper. The item "Immediate measures, status assessments, traffic routing" was initially listed at 5 million euros, but according to information from February 27, the figure is now 3 million euros.

The remaining sum was due for the actual demolition work. The costs for the two bridge sections not directly affected by the collapse were reduced slightly by 500,000 euros to 20.5 million euros. The city had to pay 6 million for the removal of the collapsed section.

Despite the slight decrease, Schollbach warns that the scale of the costs should also be borne in mind for the new construction. "Almost 30 million euros were needed to remove an existing bridge. That is an enormous sum for our city," he said in a statement.

The Carola Bridge - a prestressed concrete structure from the GDR era - partially collapsed on the night of September 11, 2024. No one was injured. The demolition took around a year. A total of 30,000 tons of concrete, 2,000 tons of steel and more than 25,000 tons of armourstones were moved in the process.

Planning for the new building is currently underway. Four planning offices are working on designs, which they are due to present by mid-May. According to the city's plans, the new bridge should be completed in 2031.
