Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) is facing strong headwinds as well as approval for his controversial statement about the cityscape and migrants. After demonstrations against the statement have already taken place in many cities across Germany, people also want to take to the streets in Dresden on Friday afternoon.
The demonstration under the slogan "We are daughters - for a colorful cityscape" has been registered with the city for around 100 participants. They want to march from Albertplatz to the CDU state office on Fetscherplatz.
Jusos criticize "racist remarks"
"We have organized a demonstration to protest against the racist remarks made by Chancellor Fritze Merz. He has not retracted his statement about the cityscape and has even presumed to use us daughters to promote his racist ideology," wrote the Dresden Jusos on Instagram.
Merz had said, among other things, that the federal government was correcting previous failures in migration policy and making progress. "But of course we still have this problem in the cityscape, and that's why the Federal Minister of the Interior is also in the process of facilitating and carrying out returns on a very large scale."
On Monday, he stuck to his stance and, when asked what exactly he meant, added: "Ask your daughters what I might have meant by that." On Wednesday, he specified that problems were caused by migrants who did not have permanent residence status, who did not work and who did not abide by the rules that apply in Germany.
Merz receives overwhelming approval for his comments according to a survey
According to a survey, Merz receives overwhelming approval from the population for his comments. The question of whether the CDU chairman was right with his statement was answered in the affirmative by 63% of respondents in the ZDF Politbarometer, with 29% answering in the negative. Significantly more older people than younger people agreed with the chancellor.
