This year, 245 guest performances by artists from Saxony received funding—but the funds had already been exhausted by the middle of the year. Demand is high.

The Saxony Cultural Foundation has already provided grants totaling 230,000 euros for 245 guest performances by artists this year. However, it was unable to meet the demand by any means. By the middle of the year, the available funds had already been fully exhausted, as the foundation announced in Dresden. The grant amounts ranged from 400 euros to 4,800 euros.

Expanding Cultural Offerings in Rural Areas

“The guest performance funding program plays a key role in expanding cultural offerings in Saxony’s rural regions and making art and culture accessible outside the major cities,” the foundation stated. In 2026, 70 of the funded guest performances took place in the Free State’s rural regions. The spectrum ranged from dance and theater productions to performances, exhibitions, and video presentations.

Saxon Artists Should Be Able to Showcase Their Work Elsewhere

About half of the total 245 guest performances took place outside of Saxony. “They offered Saxon ensembles and artists the opportunity to present their work to a broader audience, tap into new venues, and increase their visibility in Germany and Europe,” the foundation further stated. Performances took place, for example, in Trier, Hamburg, and Munich, as well as in Spain, Poland, and Austria.

Support for the independent arts scene

“Funding for guest performances is an important tool for strengthening the independent arts scene in Saxony in particular,” emphasized Foundation Director Manuel Frey. It opens up new performance and presentation opportunities for artists. “By allowing productions that have already been created to be shown in other locations, it also promotes their long-term use and impact beyond the original venue,” said Frey.
