In a joint conversation, Mayor Sven Schulze of Chemnitz and Ivan Fedorov, mayor of the currently occupied Ukrainian city of Melitopol, discussed possible support measures. The talks focused on concrete assistance, including the provision of decommissioned fire engines and medical supplies by Chemnitz Hospital.
"Chemnitz has undergone many changes, including destruction by war. Yet we can hardly imagine how life is currently for the people of Melitopol," said Mayor Sven Schulze. He stressed the importance of concrete assistance and Melitopol's readiness for long-term cooperation.
Ivan Fedorov expressed his gratitude for the support, which is expressed not only in words but also in deeds. "Our friendly relations began even before the war in Ukraine. We value this friendship and are grateful to the people of Chemnitz," Fedorov said.
The southern Ukrainian city of Melitopol was occupied shortly after the Russian war of aggression began. Fedorov was captured by Russian troops and interrogated before being released. He now heads Melitopol's government-in-exile from the city of Zaporizhzhya, which lies about 100 kilometers north of Melitopol.
