The demolition of the Carola Bridge is expected to cost the state capital of Dresden 32 million euros. This is according to an answer from the city administration to a question from the Left Party parliamentary group in the city council.
This means that the city's cost estimate is significantly higher than the last figures quoted. At the end of July, the project manager for the demolition, Grit Ernst from the road and civil engineering office of the state capital, had estimated the demolition costs at 18 million euros.
New construction from 2028 at the earliest
According to the city administration, 27 million euros alone were required for the demolition of all three bridges. A further five million euros were also incurred for safety measures, traffic routing and recording the condition of the bridge.
According to the city council, the new construction of the Carola Bridge in Dresden is due to be completed in 2031 and could begin in the second quarter of 2028. This summer, the city council decided to build a four-lane replacement for the bridge, which partially collapsed last year.
On the night of 11 September 2024, one of the three strands of the Carola Bridge collapsed unexpectedly over a length of around 100 meters. There were no vehicles or people on the 1970s structure at the time, so no one was injured.
