In Saxony, there are increasing calls for a ban on the deportation of rejected asylum seekers to Iran. The background to this is the excesses of violence with which the Iranian leadership is reacting to the protests in the country. Following the Greens, the Saxon Refugee Council also made clear demands. "In view of this dramatic situation, deportations to Iran are unjustifiable. They can be life-threatening for those affected," explained Angela Müller from the management of the Refugee Council.
Stop deportations without exceptions
According to Müller, Saxony must not look the other way when people are persecuted, tortured and killed. "Anyone who deports people now is accepting the most serious human rights violations." There must be a ban on deportations without exceptions. Chain deportations via third countries must also be consistently ruled out. The Refugee Council is also calling for asylum practices to be adapted to include Iranians who are critical of the regime. Furthermore, critics of the Iranian leadership living in Germany must be protected.
The Greens in the Saxon state parliament had already called for a halt to deportations on Wednesday. "In view of the repression of civil society and the violence against demonstrators, it is irresponsible to send people back to Iran," emphasized parliamentary group leader Franziska Schubert, referring to the practice in Rhineland-Palatinate, where such a stop is in place. "This model shows what a policy based on solidarity and human rights can look like (...)." Germany must show clear solidarity with the Iranian democracy and women's movement.
The federal states of Hesse and Schleswig-Holstein are also currently not deporting any rejected asylum seekers to Iran.
