The Bundeswehr is currently practising dropping leaflets in Upper Lusatia. They are sent into the air with the help of helium balloons. In the event of an emergency, the aim is to inform people who would otherwise be difficult to reach, according to the Saxony State Command. As part of the exercise, only training leaflets are dropped, on which a symbol and a text for the finder are printed.
The leaflets are supposed to arrive at the Oberlausitz military training area - but depending on the wind and weather, they could deviate from their flight path and land in the surrounding villages. Because leaflets could drift as far as Poland and the Czech Republic, the neighboring countries have also been informed.
The "Colder Iron 2026" exercise serves to consolidate the troops' capabilities, it was said. Around 100 soldiers have been deployed from Mayen in Rhineland-Palatinate to Saxony for the training of the Bundeswehr's Operational Communications Center.
