The AfD wants to secure more money for music schools in Saxony in the negotiations on the double budget for 2025 and 2026. They will apply for a doubling of funding to around 15.7 million euros per year, the parliamentary group announced.
The AfD referred to a report in the "Sächsische Zeitung" newspaper, according to which the Sächsische Schweiz music school needs an unscheduled grant of 300,000 euros to survive. The fees for parents had already been drastically increased. A further increase is due in August. Half an hour of piano lessons per week costs 68 euros per month.
Music schools have to increase fees due to cost pressure
"Many parents in the district of Meißen were also presented with a real cost hit a few days ago. Only high earners will soon be able to afford the cost of music school for their children. However, we must make it possible for all children to learn an instrument," explained MP Thomas Kirste. If the "ideological cultural projects" were to be cut, this could easily be financed.
The music schools are facing major financial challenges, particularly as a result of the so-called Herrenberg ruling by the Federal Social Court. According to this ruling, teachers must always be employed and subject to social security contributions. This makes the costs for music schools more expensive, and many of them fear for their existence.
