In June 2022, there was an AfD national party conference in Riesa. There were protests then too. This time, however, the demonstrations and blockades had a greater impact. / Photo: Jan Woitas/dpa

"Always courageous. Always for us," reads a billboard next to Alice Weidel's picture. But before the delegates can choose the AfD leader as their candidate for chancellor, they have to get past the protests.

The AfD federal party conference in Riesa, Saxony, did not start at the scheduled time this morning. This was due to protests by opponents of the party on several access roads. At 10.00 a.m., only a fraction of the approximately 600 delegates had arrived at the venue.

According to information from party circles, the party chairwoman, Alice Weidel, who is to be named as the AfD's candidate for chancellor at the two-day convention, was also held up. Police have set up checkpoints around the site.
