The trade unions are increasing the pressure in the wage dispute for the public sector in the federal states. Teachers in the Zwickau region have been called out on an all-day warning strike today, according to the Saxon Teachers' Association (SLV).
"The impact on the schools is unclear because many teachers are civil servants and are not allowed to take part in the strike," said Steffen Winkler, the SLV's collective bargaining officer, when asked this morning. Between 500 and 1,000 teachers are expected to attend the demonstration. The third round of collective bargaining is scheduled for February 11.
Why are the teachers striking?
The unions are demanding a seven percent pay rise for the more than 920,000 state employees covered by the collective agreement - but at least 300 euros more. The collective agreement applies not only to teachers, but also to many other professions. Around 2.2 million people are affected nationwide. The agreement is to be applied to around 1.3 million civil servants. The final round of collective bargaining is scheduled for February 11 to 13.
