The Dresden Palucca University of Dance is celebrating its 100th birthday with a ceremony on Saturday. At the event in Dresden's Blockhaus - the Archive of the Avant-Garde (ADA) - young women and men from the second year of the Bachelor of Dance program will also perform improvisations. Afterwards, the Palucca Tanzwoche Hiddensee will be moved to the garden of the ADA. Every year, students come to the island of Hiddensee to dance and improvise on the beach.
Gret Palucca (1902-1993) founded her school in Dresden in 1925. The co-founder of German expressive dance taught at her place of work until she was very old. Today, training begins at the age of ten. In grades 5 and 6, children learn in orientation classes, while grades 7 to 10 are junior classes. Admission to the three-year bachelor's degree course in dance is decided in the final year.
There are also master's degree courses in dance education and choreography as well as a master class course and apprentice or internship programs. In the current semester, 216 pupils and students from around 25 countries are receiving training. The Palucca University of Dance is Germany's only independent dance academy. Students receive a broad education - in classical and contemporary dance as well as improvisation.
