More and more people in Saxony are attending lectures as guest students. As the State Statistical Office announced on Friday, a total of 918 people registered as guests at a university in the Free State in the winter semester 2023/24 - 96 (11.7 percent) more than in the previous year. According to the data, more than a third of guest students (37.1 percent) were at least 60 years old. The oldest guest was 95 years old, the youngest 15.

According to the data, the number of guest students has thus increased for the third year in a row, but is still not at the level before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. A total of 1347 guest students were counted in the 2019/20 winter semester.

The University of Leipzig reported the highest number of guest students (495 people). It was followed by the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences with 116 guests and the Technical University in Chemnitz (101 people). The majority (39.1 percent) of guest students opted for a humanities subject as their first field of study. 21.4 percent attended lectures in law, economics and social sciences, while 19.4 percent attended engineering.
