The number of students at Saxony's universities fell slightly in the winter semester 2023/24 compared to the previous year. According to the State Statistical Office, a total of 103,444 students were enrolled - 1.4 percent fewer than in the previous year. The number of first-time university students rose by 7 percent to 19,000.

A total of 72,190 students were enrolled at the state's universities, 2 percent fewer than in the previous year. At the universities of applied sciences, the number of students fell by 0.7 percent to 26,413. At the art colleges, the number of students remained almost constant at a total of 3136, according to the report. The number of foreign students has increased. At 18.4 percent, the proportion was almost 4 percentage points higher than in the previous year.
