A heavily intoxicated man drove a van in serpentine lines on the Autobahn 13. Witnesses alerted the officers on Friday, according to the police. A police check at the Am Finkenberg parking lot (Meißen district) revealed that the 40-year-old had a breath alcohol level of 4.2 per mille.
The officers confiscated the man's driving license, ordered a blood sample to be taken and took him into custody to sober up. The man is being investigated for drunk driving. The van was using both lanes in the direction of Berlin and was only driving at 50 km/h at times.
At a blood alcohol level of 0.5 per mille or more, driving is prohibited in Germany. At more than 1.1 per mille, it becomes a criminal offense due to "absolute unfitness to drive". According to Caritas, severe acute alcohol intoxication begins at a blood alcohol content of over three per mille, which in the worst case can lead to death as a result of respiratory arrest.
