The railroad bridge in the center of Mittelherwigsdorf (district of Görlitz) is completely closed to vehicle traffic for an extended period at the beginning of the week due to significant damage to the structure. According to the Görlitz district office, a special inspection revealed massive new cracks on the abutments and wing walls. The cause is a so-called alkali-silica reaction, also known colloquially as "concrete cancer", which destroys the concrete of the bridge built in 1976 in the long term.
Pedestrians and cyclists not affected
The bridge had already been closed on one side and restricted to 3.5 tons of tonnage. It is now necessary to completely exclude vehicle traffic in order to prevent further damage. Pedestrians and cyclists can continue to use the bridge, and access to Mittelherwigsdorf station will also be maintained.
Trains will be allowed to run under the bridge at normal speed again from Monday. A supplementary report on the structural condition is currently being prepared. The results are expected before the start of the summer vacation. It is already clear that the bridge will be demolished and replaced by a new structure. The plans are being drawn up in consultation with Deutsche Bahn.
Reroutes, replacement stops and earlier departures
During the closure, traffic will be widely rerouted via Zittau and Hörnitz. Bus services will also be affected. Several bus stops will be closed and replacement stops will be set up. Passengers should expect earlier departures and slightly delayed arrivals.
