Seven more vocational schools in Saxony are to receive large sums of EU funding for modern equipment and construction projects. As announced by the Saxon Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, more than 1.3 million euros from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) and co-financing from the Free State are available for this purpose. With this, Saxony wants to adapt vocational training to the new requirements of the labor market and strengthen the supply of skilled workers in structurally weak regions.
"We are investing in modern learning spaces and thus strengthening the future viability of our vocational schools in Saxony," said Education Minister Conrad Clemens (CDU).
These schools will benefit from EU funding
The institutions receiving funding include the Berufliches Schulzentrum (BSZ) Leipziger Land with around 325,000 euros for the modernization of specialist cabinets and the BSZ Eilenburg with around 304,000 euros for new heating technology, among other things. The BSZ Löbau will also benefit with around 256,000 euros for equipping specialist cabinets and workshops.
The Just Transition Fund supports regions that are particularly affected by the structural change towards a climate-neutral economy - such as the Lusatian mining district (districts of Bautzen and Görlitz) and the Central German mining district (Leipzig, districts of Leipziger Land and North Saxony) as well as the city of Chemnitz.
Long-term prospects for Saxony
Funding had already been granted to schools in Leipzig, Wurzen, Chemnitz, Bautzen and Niesky, among others, in previous rounds. A total of around 43 million euros is available from EU and state funds for the funding period from 2021 to 2027. The funding can cover up to 90 percent of the eligible costs.
