Mühlrose was the last place in Saxony to be resettled for the advancing open-cast lignite mine. With one exception, the last plots of land have now been abandoned. According to Lausitz Energie Bergbau AG (LEAG), only one resident's relocation has been delayed "for personal reasons". The mining company expects the property to be handed over in the course of the year. The district road that led from Schleife to the old village is now a service road and is closed to public traffic.
The abandoned areas of the former district of Trebendorf are gradually being cleared in order to be able to mine the coal stored underneath. LEAG still assumes that the amount will be needed to generate electricity, in particular to supply the Boxberg power plant "without interruption and in line with demand" until the end of 2038. A large part of the former population of Mühlrose had moved to the neighboring municipality of Schleife. A housing estate was built there with new homes for the resettlers.
