More and more young people in eastern Saxony are opting for training in the skilled trades. According to the Dresden Chamber of Skilled Crafts, 2,283 men and women had started an apprenticeship contract with a skilled crafts company in the chamber's district by the end of November - slightly more than a year earlier. At the end of November 2024, there were 2,162.
Why are more and more people choosing the skilled trades?
"Despite the still rather tense economic situation,
trade businesses are focusing on training," said Andreas Brzezinski, Managing Director of the Dresden Chamber of Skilled Crafts. He emphasized that the companies are thus opening up prospects for young people in the region, while industry is currently having to hold back due to the economic situation.
"At the same time, we are also noticing increasing interest among school leavers in training in the skilled trades," said Brzezinski. Many were looking for a family atmosphere in smaller companies in their home country and wanted to create something with their own hands.
According to the figures, 504 of the new apprenticeship contracts were for women and 1,779 for men. In the Dresden Chamber district - which includes the districts of Meißen, Bautzen, Görlitz, Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains and the state capital of Dresden - training is provided in more than 80 professions, from plant mechanics to two-wheel mechatronics technicians.
