Electricity storage systems are considered important for the energy transition. In Saxony, the number of systems is continuously increasing.

In Saxony, more and more electricity storage systems are being purchased and operated. According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, based on data from the Federal Network Agency, almost 61,000 battery storage systems were in operation in the state last year. In 2020, there were around 7,700.

Battery storage systems include smaller private systems for electricity generated by solar panels on roofs or house fronts. However, larger commercial systems are also included. The capacity of all 60,891 storage systems is 545.5 megawatts.

Funding opportunities for electricity storage

There are various funding opportunities for private individuals, homeowners' associations, associations and companies in Saxony for the purchase of electricity storage systems. Funding is available for storage systems that are coupled with a photovoltaic system with a maximum output of between 30 and 1,000 kilowatts.

In contrast, there is no funding for large battery storage systems, so-called stand-alone systems. "In our view, this is also not necessary, as we believe that there is generally a business case for such projects even without funding," said the Ministry of Economic Affairs. An economic benefit is assessed in a so-called business case.

Multiple large-scale projects in planning

Multiple large-scale plants are therefore in planning. According to the ministry, a battery storage facility with a capacity of 500 megawatts is to be built in Oberschöna at the Freiberg Nord substation in the first expansion stage. The company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partner is responsible for the project. A storage facility with a capacity of 15 megawatts is also due to go into operation in Döbeln in November.
