The prime minister views the announcement that plans for legislation on the construction of new gas-fired power plants will be amended to benefit northern and eastern states as a positive development and identifies potential locations from his perspective.

Saxony’s Minister-President Michael Kretschmer welcomes plans to build new gas-fired power plants, including in eastern Germany. In an interview with MDR Saxony, Kretschmer praised Federal Minister of Economic Affairs Katherina Reiche (both CDU), who has announced that she will work more closely with the northern and eastern states on the related legislative plans.

Thanks in part to the commitment of lawmakers from the new federal states, “we will have a very good chance of seeing gas-fired power plants built, for example, in Lippendorf and at sites in Lusatia,” said Kretschmer. In his view, the construction of gas-fired power plants is a necessary component for securing Germany’s energy supply.

Previously, the legislative plans had given priority to the “grid-connected south,” which includes Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, among others. Now, federal states in the north and east are to be given greater consideration.

New gas-fired power plants are intended to ensure the security of electricity supply as part of the phased phase-out of coal planned through 2038 and to serve as a kind of reserve in the future.
