The Greens see one of their core issues in Saxony under threat - the expansion of cycling. When they were still in government, a lot was done for cyclists. But now the money is missing.

The Greens criticize the planned cuts for cycling in Saxony. "The draft of the current budget represents a departure from the transport turnaround," explained Katja Meier, member of the state parliament. Instead of more safe and well-developed cycle paths, funding for this area has been radically cut. Almost all new projects are threatened with extinction. The new state government has thus completely thrown overboard its self-imposed targets of more than 100 kilometers of new cycle paths per year.

"The political prioritization does not sufficiently take into account the increasing number of people who are getting on their bikes more and more often in urban and rural areas and, above all, children who should be able to get around safely and independently," argued Meier. She had asked the state parliament about the planning and construction of cycle paths over the past five years. In 2023, around eight kilometers of cycle paths were built, in 2024 it was just under 20 kilometers. In addition, almost 64 kilometers are under construction and 153 are being planned. The Greens were in government during the last legislative period.

"A large part of the planning that has already begun will probably not be continued, but postponed indefinitely. If construction does take place at a later date, there is not only the threat of renewed planning costs, but also a significant increase in construction prices," emphasized Meier.
