Dulig: Secure existing local transport services first

In the discussion about the expansion of local public transport, Transport Minister Martin Dulig has emphasized that existing structures must be maintained first. "At the moment, it's about safeguarding the existing services in times of tight budgets," said the SPD politician in an interview with the "Sächsische Zeitung" (Monday). He spoke out in favor of expanding local public transport connections, especially in rural areas. However, in view of the budget situation of local, state and federal authorities, the current status should be maintained first.

Dulig spoke out in favor of maintaining the Deutschlandticket, which allows people to use public transport throughout Germany for 49 euros a month. "The Deutschlandticket is and remains a successful project. It's not just a question of price. Knowing that I have a ticket that is valid everywhere, no matter where I am, is convincing."

The minister also explained in the interview that he would support a speed limit on freeways in principle. However, he does not currently see this as a priority. He was in favor of 30 km/h zones in front of sensitive areas within towns and cities, such as daycare centers and nursing homes. He criticized the fact that it should be easier for local authorities to designate such zones. "In Germany, we have been making traffic policy from the perspective of the windshield for decades, which is no longer in keeping with the times," said Dulig.
