The replacement service due to the closure of Dresden Central Station has started. The established connections with streetcars and buses went into operation as planned this morning, according to a spokesperson for the Upper Elbe Transport Association (VVO). There were isolated delays due to the weather conditions, but overall the replacement services worked well.
No train service at the main station until Monday morning
The main station has been closed since the morning. No trains will be running there until 4.00 a.m. on Monday morning. During this time, long-distance services to and from Berlin and Leipzig will end and begin in Dresden-Neustadt. Regular local services will continue to the main station and additional replacement services will be provided by a special streetcar line 26, which runs between Mickten and Plauen. There will be replacement bus services to and from Prague between Neustadt and Usti nad Labem in the Czech Republic. This will extend the journey time by around an hour.
Regional services and the S-Bahn will be canceled on all lines between the Dresden stations of Neustadt, Reick, Plauen and Friedrichstadt. Passengers there will also have to make use of alternatives on regular local services or the replacement bus service and streetcar 26.
Further closures in February
The reason for this is construction work on the crossing structure under Budapester Straße as part of the lengthy expansion of the Leipzig-Dresden line, which has started on schedule according to a Deutsche Bahn spokesperson. The project is due to reach the halfway point this weekend, with completion planned by 2027. Deutsche Bahn has announced a further closure of the main station for February 14 to 16.
