Dresden Central Station has a new hall roof. Work began back in 2022 and the final stages are planned for next spring.

After three years of construction, the renewal of the roof membrane at Dresden Central Station has been completed. The construction work was completed on schedule, as announced by Deutsche Bahn. "By renewing the roof membrane, we were able to restore the functionality of the roof structure and secure it permanently," said Heiko Klaffenbach, Head of Station Management Dresden.

The hall roof had suffered severe damage in the winter of 2010/11 - a good four years after completion. Now so-called skylights have been installed. Snow drifts and broken ice can be deposited on them without clogging the funnels underneath for the drainage of melt and rainwater.

Work began in 2022

The renovation of the hall roof began in 2022. The old roof covering an area of around 33,000 square meters was removed in three sections and replaced with a new membrane. Work on the last section on the south-western side began in early July. The costs of around 50 million euros are being borne by the federal government, Saxony and the railroad.

The work will be fully completed by spring 2025. The final steps, such as removing the safety nets and working platforms and installing the snow guard, will then be completed next year.
