Train services between Dresden and Zittau are disrupted due to the acute risk of a bridge collapsing. The section between Mittelherwigsdorf and Zittau is closed until further notice, according to the Länderbahn. This means that trains on lines RB61 and RE2 will terminate in Ebersbach with immediate effect, while line L7 (Seifhennersdorf-Zittau-Liberec) will be completely suspended. "A replacement service is currently being organized under high pressure," the private railroad company announced. "It is currently not possible to predict when train services can be resumed."
According to the Görlitz district office, the bridge in Mittelherwigsdorf has been under close observation for some time due to damage. An expert opinion on stability has now shown that "a spontaneous failure with an acute risk of collapse can no longer be completely ruled out", the authority announced. It has therefore been closed with immediate effect to pedestrians and cyclists, who were previously still permitted. Once the bridge has been demolished, trains should be able to run again without restrictions. This dismantling is planned for November at the latest.
