In 2025, Saxony received around 213 million euros in funding to improve cycling, walking and local transport. The funds were distributed across almost 125 projects in all 13 Saxon districts and cities, according to a list from the State Office for Roads and Transport (LASuV).
The aim is to sustainably improve road safety, strengthen environmentally friendly transport and create a modern transport infrastructure. "Anyone who wants to shape the mobility of tomorrow must consistently invest in a safe, efficient and sustainable infrastructure today," said Gabriele Ladewig, President of the LASuV, according to the press release. The aim was to use the funds to enable real progress and drive change in the transport sector.
Largely for local transport
A large proportion of the funding (185.8 million euros) was used to modernize local transport. The funds were used, for example, to purchase a total of 85 electric buses, most of them in the Erzgebirgskreis district (19) and in Bautzen (16). The expansion of the corresponding charging infrastructure was also advanced in 13 projects.
More than 20 bus stops were also made barrier-free. Most of the upgraded or converted stops are listed in the districts of Meißen (8) and Bautzen (7). The LASuV also approved funding for the renewal of power lines and transformer stations on railroad tracks.
27.3 million euros for cycling and pedestrian traffic
There was 27.3 million euros in funding for cycling and pedestrian traffic. This was used to build three new footpath and cycle path bridges. Two of them cross the Parthe river in Leipzig and Taucha (district of North Saxony), while another is located in Lunzenau (district of Central Saxony).
A total of ten cycle path projects are listed. For example, a new route was built between Großschönau and Jonsdorf in the district of Görlitz. A cycle traffic concept was co-financed for Sebnitz (Sächsische Schweiz-Osterzgebirge district).
Pedestrians benefit the least from the funding. In addition to the new bridges, there are only three projects for footpaths on the LASuV list: a renovation on the B6 in Hochkirch (district of Bautzen) as well as two renovations on the B196 in Dittersbach and Frankenberg and on the S185 in Rechenberg-Bienenmühle (both in the district of Central Saxony).
Leipzig with the most funded projects
Regionally, the projects are distributed very differently. Leipzig (24) received the most awards: there, the LASuV supported the expansion of the city's light rail system, the creation of a cycle path and a number of projects to renew power lines and railroad substations.
The second most projects were funded in the district of Bautzen (18), including the expansion or new construction of several barrier-free bus stops and the procurement of 16 e-buses. The fewest funded projects were in Chemnitz (4).
