Jazz trumpeter Till Brönner likes crossovers between jazz and classical music and enjoys playing with large orchestras. "When these worlds come together, you have to think about how both sides look good and how it sounds as if it has always been there," he said at the Semper Opera Ball in Dresden. The musician, who has been closely associated with the city of culture as a professor at the Carl Maria von Weber University of Music since 2009, made his debut with the Sächsische Staatskapelle on Friday evening with an arrangement of "What a Wonderful World".
The musician explained that it had to be arranged by someone who was familiar with such an orchestra and also knew "where I needed a few liberties". You also need a conductor "who wants to get involved and think about it" and the right producers. Jazz and classical music is "one of the most beautiful projects for me", said Brönner. "These are albums for eternity if they are well arranged." He himself loves improvisation and has great respect for orchestral musicians who deliver perfection on the dot. "I freed myself from that early on."
