Michael Kretschmer meets Gojko Mitić, an East German acting legend, at the inauguration of a sandstone stele for the film 'The Sons of the Great Bear' in Rathen on May 19.

Saxon Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer (CDU) will meet with an East German acting legend in Rathen on May 19: Gojko Mitić. The head of government and the "chief" of the GDR film industry will take part in the inauguration of a sandstone stele, which is to be dedicated at the location of the film "The Sons of the Great Bear", as the Landesbühnen Sachsen announced on Friday.

Mitić played the chief Tokei-ihto in the 1966 Defa film. On this occasion, the final scene of the film will also be re-enacted by amateur actors from the "Gojko Mitić" acting group from Bischofswerda. Before a performance of the play "Shatterhand" at the Felsenbühne Rathen, there will be a panel discussion with Kretschmer, Mitić and director Manuel Schöbel.

Mitić comes from Serbia and is a celebrity in eastern Germany. What Pierre Brice was for the Karl May films in the West, Mitić embodied in the Defa films about Native Americans. Films such as "Sons of the Great Bear", "White Wolves" and "The Trail of the Hawk" had cult status in the GDR.
