Saxony's Minister of Social Affairs Petra Köpping (SPD) has called for the fight against anti-Semitism and hate speech 86 years after the night of the pogroms. The events of that night have shown "how quickly exclusion and hate speech can turn into murderous violence", the minister said. It is therefore all the more important to resolutely oppose all forms of discrimination and misanthropy.
The ministry referred to the work of the Saxony Democracy Center at the Ministry of Social Affairs. Among other things, it provides advice to those involved in and affected by racist violence and offers support to local authorities. According to the information, strategies against anti-Semitism and conspiracy ideologies are also being developed, for example in model projects such as "Debunk" by the Amadeu Antonio Foundation or the "Gibt's doch gar nicht" project by HATiKVA e.V.
On the night of the pogrom on 9 November 1938, the hitherto unprecedented violence began. The pogrom night on November 9, 1938 marked the beginning of the worst riots against Jews since the National Socialists came to power in Germany in 1933. Synagogues were set on fire, Jewish businesses destroyed and thousands of Jewish citizens abused, arrested or murdered.
