Chemnitz is presenting itself as the European Capital of Culture this year. Representatives of political parties are already assessing the event positively and hope for similar effects in the future.

Representatives of several parliamentary groups in the Saxon state parliament believe that Chemnitz is on the road to success as European Capital of Culture 2025. The project is not over yet and is already a "great success - not only for the city, but for the entire region", Sandra Gockel, cultural policy spokesperson for the CDU parliamentary group, told the German Press Agency. "We hope that this foundation will be built on, as in other European Capitals of Culture, and that the attraction will continue." The fascination of Chemnitz lies in the embedding of tradition, culture and modernity in a beautiful landscape with the Ore Mountains and surrounding countryside.

"Cultural venues are full, festivals and concerts well attended"

On Monday, the state parliament's culture committee discussed the Capital of Culture. "The city is on the move and Europe is a guest - the cultural venues are full, festivals and concerts are well attended and tourism figures are rising," concluded SPD culture expert Martin Dulig. The task now for Chemnitz is to work together with the Free State of Saxony to secure cultural and economic developments and at the same time strengthen participation, diversity and European partnerships in order to further consolidate the identity of the cultural region.

BSW praises the contribution of the churches

"We are grateful for the overwhelming program that the people of Chemnitz have put together this year - and also for the great contribution that the churches have made in impressive ecumenical fraternity," said Ingolf Huhn, cultural and religious policy spokesperson for the BSW parliamentary group. Successful sustainability must now include ensuring that the major institutions as well as the diverse independent arts and cultural landscape remain stable and viable for the coming years and decades.

Greens hope for lasting effects

For Green politician Claudia Maicher, the Capital of Culture Chemnitz is proof of how culture strengthens active democratic coexistence and the coexistence of people from different generations and backgrounds. "We Greens are committed to ensuring that these achievements continue to be used in Chemnitz and the cultural region beyond 2025. To this end, the Free State should assume long-term financial responsibility as a reliable partner in the implementation of the legacy plan." The plan is a long-term strategy of the city of Chemnitz to ensure that the title of Capital of Culture continues to have a sustainable impact beyond 2025.
