After extensive restoration work, the painting "The Faithful Lady of Kriebstein" will return to the Knights' Hall of the castle of the same name on July 1. The painting, which measures 2.1 by 1.4 meters, was created around 250 years ago by the Württemberg court painter Nicolas Guibal (1725-1784) and is one of the most important exhibits, as the museum announced on Thursday. Due to massive damage, it was removed in October 2023.

During the restoration, it was reportedly discovered that an earlier treatment with paste glue was the cause of the painting's condition. The canvas had contracted due to moisture and the paint layer had partially detached. After five months of treatment, the painting is now back in "excellent conservation and aesthetic condition" - and can be seen in its old place.

The painting is a testimony to the legend according to which the women living in the castle outwitted their besiegers in the 15th century. According to the legend, they asked him to let them leave with the most precious things they could carry - and then carried their husbands away on their backs instead of jewelry.
