The Spanish soprano Nuria Rial gave the Dresden Music Festival a great moment. Together with the ensemble Les Cornets Noirs, the exceptional singer performed a program of works by early baroque Italian masters in the Frauenkirche.
The way Rial interpreted the arias by composers such as Claudio Monteverdi, Alessandro Grandi and Giovanni Legrenzi with her pure yet warm voice audibly fascinated the audience in the well-filled church. There was loud applause between the pieces and at the end.
Rial and her five-piece ensemble - the musicians are all trained at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, the teaching and research institute for early music at the Basel Academy of Music - thanked the audience with an encore. The acoustics in the Frauenkirche, which are rather unsuitable for many ensembles, also played their part and provided a very special sound experience.
The Dresden Music Festival is one of Germany's best-known classical music festivals and has also opened up to other genres such as jazz, dance and rock. They now enjoy a good reputation throughout Europe and, every year from mid-May to mid-June, present stars of the scene as well as many artists who are still at the beginning of their careers. This year, the festival's motto is "Lightness of Being". A total of 64 concerts and events are planned until June 14.
