The writer Ingo Schulze will take over the 39th Bamberg Poetry Professorship in the summer semester of 2026. This was announced by the University and the City of Bamberg. The 63-year-old will succeed prominent guests such as Jenny Erpenbeck and, most recently, Alina Bronsky. The professorship is considered one of the most prestigious awards of its kind in the German-speaking world.
Schulze, who was born in Dresden, initially worked as a dramaturge and journalist after studying in Jena. After his debut novel "33 Moments of Happiness" in 1995, he quickly became one of the most important voices in contemporary German-language literature. This was followed by further novels (such as "Simple Storys"), numerous short stories, children's books and essays Schulze has been President of the German Academy for Language and Poetry since 2023.
Schulze has a special highlight in store for his visit to the World Heritage City: on 6 May, he plans to present his new novel "Das Wasser im August" at the ETA Hoffmann Theater, which is due to be published in the summer.
