The reconstruction of Dresden's Royal Palace has been ongoing for more than 40 years. Now, for the first time, visitors can once again experience the historic state rooms on a tour.

The completion of the Festeage marks a milestone in the reconstruction of the Dresden Residenzschloss. From Wednesday, the Proposition Hall and the Grand Ballroom will be open to visitors. For the first time, museum guests will once again be able to visit all of the state rooms on one tour instead of ending up in dead ends when strolling around, as Bernd Ebert, Director General of the Dresden State Art Collections, said.

The new permanent exhibition "Masks and Crowns. Festive culture and the representation of power at the Dresden court" brings courtly life to life. It begins in the Giant's Hall with tournament scenes, continues through the audience rooms, the large ballroom, the tower room with the historic porcelain cabinet, the Proposition Hall and then the parade rooms of Augustus the Strong through to the Türckische Cammer.

"This is a place that is probably unique in the world," said Ebert. "We show objects from the festive culture, courtly life, props from tournament fights, masquerades and processions in a historically reconstructed environment." It is a collage of different architectural styles and uses from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, the Baroque, the 19th century and the 21st century.

The reconstruction work in the residence of Saxon electors and kings from the 16th century, which was destroyed in 1945, is due to be completed in 2028. According to Berger, the grand opening is planned for spring 2029. Reconstruction began back in 1985.
