After great interest during the test run, Dresden's town hall tower will open permanently to visitors from the summer. The exact start date depends on whether the peregrine falcons that regularly breed there use the tower to raise their offspring: If there are no eggs in the nest, it will start as early as May, according to the city. However, if the strictly protected birds hatch offspring, those interested will have to wait until July.
Bookings online after the start of the season
Reservations for the tower tour can then be made online via Dresden Information. Participation costs a regular nine euros, reduced six euros. Children under the age of six can visit free of charge. The ascent is not barrier-free. After an elevator ride to the fourth floor, there are 270 steps in a winding, narrow staircase to the viewing platform.
The tower of the New Town Hall was built between 1905 and 1910 and, at around 100 meters, is the tallest building in the city centre. The viewing platform at a height of 68 meters offers a view of the rooftops of Dresden, and in good weather the view extends as far as the Elbe Sandstone Mountains.
Great interest in test operation
The viewing platform was closed for 12 years because there was no escape route. Last July, the state capital launched a test operation with a new visitor concept, which will end next Sunday. The offer was reportedly met with great interest. The dates offered were fully booked, with around 2,850 visitors enjoying the view over the city. In future, twelve people can take part in each tour instead of just five as before.
