In the fairy tale of the same name, breadcrumbs are actually meant to help Hansel and Gretel find their way home. But hungry birds thwart their plan. This marks the beginning of a series of misfortunes that culminates in a hostage situation—yet still ends with a happy ending. In a new production of Engelbert Humperdinck’s fairy-tale opera, the Dresden State Operetta is now placing greater emphasis on the bread. “It symbolizes naturalness, authenticity, and a sense of security—values that play a special role in the story of the two siblings,” the theater announced. The State Operetta commissioned the Dresden Bakery to develop a special “Hansel and Gretel Bread.” Its specific characteristics and exactly what role it plays remain a secret for now. Bakery owner Tino Gierig plans to have five types of bread tasted this Thursday—by director and artistic director Kathrin Kondaurow, actress Silke Richter (who plays the witch), and two girls from the children’s choir. The premiere is on November 7. Copyright 2026, dpa (www.dpa.de). All rights reserved
