Her historical saga about midwives has captivated millions of readers. Now author Sabine Ebert is being honored in the town she has called home for many years.

Honor for bestselling author Sabine Ebert: The 68-year-old is the first woman ever to be awarded honorary citizenship by the city of Freiberg. She is the city’s most important literary ambassador and, through her midwife saga, has made Freiberg known to an audience of millions far beyond Saxony’s borders, explained Mayor Martin Seltmann.

In doing so, she has rendered outstanding service to the city’s reputation, its tourism development, and its cultural identity. Thousands of tourists have come to Freiberg because they wanted to get to know the city through Ebert’s novels.

Born in Aschersleben (Saxony-Anhalt) in 1958, Ebert lived and worked in Freiberg for many years after completing her studies. There, she first founded an independent newspaper in 1990 and wrote several nonfiction books about her adopted home. In 2017, she also became the city’s first “city writer.” Today, she says she lives in Dresden. Freiberg’s honorary citizenship is to be conferred upon her in early January at the city’s New Year’s reception.
