Caspar David Friedrich was the talk of the town last year. There were several exhibitions to mark the 250th birthday of the famous Romantic painter - now also in places where he liked to draw.

In future, a virtual gallery in Saxon Switzerland will allow visitors to encounter the famous master of German Romanticism, Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840). The immersive show on the work of the painter, who found motifs for world-famous works such as the "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" in the region, is intended to draw attention to this connection with the celebrated artist - "and to motivate people to follow in his footsteps". The Saxon Switzerland Tourism Association sees it as a belated gift for his 250th birthday.

Friedrich often drew in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains

Friedrich, who lived and painted in Dresden for over 40 years, loved to roam the Elbe Sandstone Mountains and draw in nature: trees, rocks or landscapes. "It is all the more astonishing that there has never been a permanent exhibition or museum dedicated to Caspar David Friedrich (1774-1840) in Saxon Switzerland, which he loved so much," explained the tourism association.

The presentation "CDFriedrich inspires" will be opened on January 31 with a ceremony in the former tourist information center in Bad Schandau, also as "a multimedia monument". According to the announcement, room-filling video projections allow visitors to "encounter the painter and his work, see the landscape through his eyes and understand the creative process - from the sketch to the painting".
