The number of abortions in Saxony fell last year. A total of 5,385 women living in Saxony reported an abortion, according to the State Statistical Office in Kamenz. In 2023, the figure was 5,582 women.
The average age of women who had an abortion was 30. Three percent of reported abortions were performed on minors. Almost all abortions (97 percent) were carried out at the request of the pregnant woman, the rest were carried out due to a medical indication. Two percent of women from the Free State of Saxony went to another federal state to have an abortion. Conversely, 35 women from abroad had an abortion performed in Saxony.
According to Section 218 of the Criminal Code, abortions are actually illegal. However, abortions in the first twelve weeks are not punishable if the woman receives counseling beforehand. An abortion also remains unpunished if there are medical reasons or if it is performed due to rape. The abolition of this paragraph is the subject of repeated debate.
