The Greens in the Saxon state parliament are calling for massive changes to the government's draft budget. Their party will introduce around 375 proposed amendments amounting to around 1.7 billion euros, announced parliamentary group leader Franziska Schubert. They also have a cover concept for this.
Greens want borrowing for important investments
"The federal government has given the federal states the opportunity to borrow, Saxony must now also take advantage of this opportunity. We are also relying on federal programmes, reallocations and a different prioritization," emphasized Schubert. The question is what is urgent and can be tackled in the medium term. State politicians must communicate this honestly and openly.
Greens: Cosmetic changes are not enough
Schubert pointed out that 2025 is already the sixth year of crisis in a row. "We need modern answers to this and a state budget that supports this with sustainable solutions. However, the draft budget presented by the CDU and SPD lacks perspective," emphasized the parliamentary group leader. Cosmetic changes were not enough for the state government's draft budget.
According to Schubert, the amendments were the result of discussions between the MPs and many committed individuals, municipalities, companies, sponsors and associations. "The changes are necessary and are intended to prevent structures from being permanently destroyed on the one hand and to maintain prospects on the other. Both are important for Saxony - in urban and rural areas."
The Greens have set six priorities in their motions: In addition to climate policy, these are education, culture, social justice, mobility and welfare. The Left Party and the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance (BSW) have also announced extensive amendments.
Saxony's government plans to spend around 25 billion euros in both 2025 and 2036. This means that expenditure will remain at the current level. Savings are planned to close a shortfall of 2.3 billion euros this year and around two billion euros in 2026. The reserve to balance the budget is to be completely dissolved and the payment into the generation fund is to be reduced by 270 million euros per year. The budget is to be passed by the state parliament in June.
