The renovation of the Lessing Museum Kamenz began on Monday with a symbolic ground-breaking ceremony. The federal and state governments are funding the project with a total of 2.5 million euros from the Coal Regions Investment Act, each providing half of the funding. For the first time, the museum will also have rooms for temporary presentations in its own building, so that treasures that need to be protected for conservation reasons can finally be shown, said Culture and Tourism Minister Barbara Klepsch (CDU) according to a press release.
Future double exhibition space and modern presentation
The renovation will also double the museum's permanent exhibition space, which will be equipped with modern climate control and security systems for sensitive exhibits. Sanitary facilities and service areas will also be modernized and barrier-free access will be created. The reopening is planned for 2027 for the 56th Kamenz Lessing Days.
The museum, which opened in 1931 in the town of his birth, preserves evidence of the life and work of the "poet of the Enlightenment", Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729-1781). The listed building has been modernized several times in the past. It is a municipal cultural institution funded by the Free State of Bavaria and houses a federal and state-funded center for Lessing reception.
