The London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano received an ovation from the audience at the Dresden Music Festival. The orchestra and its soloists received standing ovations and were celebrated like pop stars.
The concert included Hector Berlioz's "Fantastic Symphony". As an encore, the British remained musically in France - with the "Pavane" by Gabriel Fauré. The first part of the concert belonged to Mozart, with the overture to the opera "The Marriage of Figaro" and the Violin Concerto No. 5 performed by Georgian-born violinist Lisa Batiashvili.
The theme of the current edition of the Dresden Music Festival is "Love". There are 58 concerts on offer until June 14. Renowned orchestras such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Symphony Orchestra and the NHK Symphony Orchestra from Tokyo have already presented their musical calling cards.
There is a great variety of styles on offer: Portuguese fado singer Mariza was a guest on Thursday, while pop musician Ronan Keating is coming on Sunday.
The Dresden Music Festival is considered the best-known classical music festival in East Germany and attracted renowned artists from the West even before the fall of the Berlin Wall. Herbert von Karajan performed with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the premiere in 1978.
